Hub City-Dalesburg reunion held June 24 The ninth annual meeting of the Hub City-Dalesburg Reunion was held Saturday, June 24, on the Dalesburg Lutheran Church lawn with a potluck dinner at 5 p.m.
Ron Johnson is president of the Hub City-Dalesburg Historical Society. Connie (Inberg) Richards is vice president and Margaret (Alne) Boline is secretary-treasurer. The society has a board of directors and donations continue to be accepted for maintenance of the monuments, erected in 1995 in both Hub City and Dalesburg. The society also has made reprints of the Swede Book written by August Peterson (1869-1950) in 1947 with a history of the Swedes who came and settled in Clay County from Sweden and their biographies.
The original capsule of Hub City and its beginning, was buried in 1935 by the Inberg family, children of Wm. (Bill) and Pearl Inberg. Dalesburg is located one and a half miles north and the Dalesburg Lutheran Church is across the road from the former Hub City garage. Once thriving businesses in both villages are now only memories. Stone pillars remain in Hub City where the garage once stood and historical monuments were placed there and in Dalesburg.
President Ron Johnson introduced Dr. Wayne Knutson of Vermillion who gave a program "Country One-Room Schools" giving many memories of the one-room schools, YCL, front recitation bench, Palmer Method writing and superintendent visits.
At the turn of the century there were 200,000 one-room schools, and 5,000 were in South Dakota. There were five schools in a 36 square mile township made of sod, logs, stucco and wood. In 1938 there were less than 3,000 one-room schools left in South Dakota. In 1969 the schools were attached to the town schools.
Following Knutson's talk, former school students remembered incidents of long ago school days, hot lunches kept warm on the floor furnace registers, the "outhouses," the winter games in the snow and much more.
A short business meeting was held and the group joined in singing the YCL song written by Maj. Joseph M. Hanson of Yankton with music by Richard Broughton of Sioux Falls, published by the Young Citizens League of Pierre.
The next meeting of this historical society will be the Midsommar Saturday in 2001 on the Dalesburg Lutheran Church lawn with a potluck supper and business meeting at 5 p.m.
Residents attending were from the neighboring community and Beresford, Vermillion, Alcester, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Boulder, CO, Bismarck, ND, Akron, IA, Glendale, AZ, Minnesota, Utah and Missouri.
