KVTK will feature ESPN, local sports broadcasting by M. Jill Karolevitz Vermillions newest radio station KVTK 1570 AM, (formerly KOSZ), hit the airwaves May 30, becoming the only all-sports radio station in the region.
Were the same frequency, but we have a new identity, said Kevin Culhane, CEO of Culhane Communications, owner of KVTK. Prior to this KOSZ was an oldies station. But there are many other oldies stations in the area and AM is not conducive to a music format. So we wanted to find a niche for our AM that would fit in with listener interest.
KVTK will feature ESPN sports radio broadcasts, including PGA Tour Radio, racing and fishing reports. Chicago Cubs baseball, select Sioux Falls Canaries baseball games and play-by-play of local and regional sporting events are also in the lineup.
So many communities depend on sports as a lifeline, Culhane said. We hope our 24-7 sports format will fill a void. ESPN was an obvious choice because of what it has to offer and it brings instant credibility to our station. It was a good anchor for our decision to change. But we knew we had to be aggressive locally, too.
Were not going to lose focus on the Vermillion area. Its too important for us, added Jim Hockett, operations manager. We have strength with ESPN nationally, but well never forget Vermillion.
Interviews of local sports figures, along with local, area and statewide news and weather will also be special features on KVTK. During the summer, a parks and recreation report will be broadcast by Lauren Tolsma at 7:45 a.m. each day. Game Day with local radio personality Joe Van Goor is a Monday through Friday afternoon feature, and Trinity Lutheran Church services will be broadcast each Sunday.
Weve been overwhelmed with the comments of support weve received since we started last week, Culhane said. Im happy and pleased.
Culhane Communications has owned both KVHT 106.3 FM and KVTK 1570 AM since 1993. The KVTK studio and corporate offices for Culhane Communications are located in Vermillion, while the KVHT studio is based in Yankton.
