Legion baseball team splits double-header Writer's note: Having just acquired the score sheets for Vermillion Legion Post #1 baseball team, I will try to recap the scheduled games in groups of two (or more) in each report.
The season opened with a split in a double-header against Sioux Falls West. Vermillion Post #1 drew first blood by scoring three runs in the second inning aided by three doubles and a single contributed by Tim Broderson, Todd Anderson, Steven Varns and Adam Brooks.
Unfortunately, those were half of the team's hit production and West tied the score in the fourth inning and then broke up the closely played game with seven runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to apply the 10-run rule.
Broderson took the loss, giving up two hits but surrendering seven walks in four innings. Eric Holoch relieved and gave up four hits and three bases on balls.
Holoch started the second game of the double-header but had a tough time finding the plate and walked eight batters while striking out two and giving up three runs in two innings. Todd Anderson took over and held the West team to one run in the remainder of the game.
The two pitchers combined for a no-hitter while walking 12 and striking out 12.
The offense came alive scoring eight runs on 11 hits. Scoring leaders were:
Adam Brooks two runs, one hit; and Steven Varns two runs, two hits; Jason Madsen one run, one hit, one RBI; Tyler Vacek two for four hits and two RBIs; Brett Mockler one run; Todd Anderson one run, one hit, two RBIs; and Dan Holoch three for three one run, one RBI.
Anderson was credited with the 8-4 win.
