Reimnitz elected Girls State official

Reimnitz elected Girls State official Justine Reimnitz, daughter of Kristy Ostrom of Vermillion was elected to the House of Representatives, city stroller and county auditor during the 54th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of South Dakota held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, May 29 – June 3. This year, approximately 475 junior girls participated in the week-long event.

The goal of the American Legion Auxiliary is to provide each Girls State delegate with a brighter understanding of Americanism and a better perspective of the rights and responsibilities of an American citizen. Under the belief that the best way to learn is by doing, SD Girls State provides training and "hands-on" practice in government at the city, county, and state levels. Thus, delegates are involved in such activities as campaigns, election boards, party conventions, legislative sessions, lobbying, court trials, and executive cabinet meetings.

Under the sponsorship of the American Legion Auxiliary, Girls State has grown from an enrollment of 117 girls in 1947 to its present enrollment of 475 girls. The goal of the American Legion Auxiliary is to provide each Girls State citizen with a brighter understanding of Americanism and new perspective of the responsibilities, duties and rights of an American citizen.

Featured guest speakers highlighting this year's session included Gov. William Janklow, Lt. Gov. Carole Hillard, Secretary of State Joyce Hazeltine, Public Utilities Commissioner Laska Shoenfelder, County Commissioner Deb Knecht, and Mayor Brenda Barger. Sen. Tom Daschle and Tim Johnson also visited with delegates during the week.
