Students receive top honors during yearbook institute Eight students received top honors during the High School Institution yearbook session June 11-15 at South Dakota State University in Brookings.
Sponsored by the High School Press Office in SDSU's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, the institute teaches sophomore and junior students new techniques for newspaper and yearbook writing, photography and desktop publishing. It has been held annually in Brookings for more than 40 years.
The intense workshops included 12-hour days resulting in a final 14-page yearbook that was completely written, designed and produced by the students.
At the end of session, selected students were awarded the title of All-Around (Best of the Best) Journalist, Photographer and Desktop Designer.
The All-Around Desktop Designer award was a tie. Ann Marie Fuchs from Huron High School and Kelly Peterson from Vermillion High School shared the honor.
This recognition entitles the students to attend special events sponsored by the High School Press Office and SDSU Journalism Department throughout the following year, including a day with the legislators in Pierre and the chance to shadow a professional media person of the student's choice.
