U-19 girls victorious over Dakota Valley The Vermillion U-19 girls' soccer team defeated Dakota Valley High School by a score of 3-0 in a match played Tuesday evening at Cotton Park. The match was the final contest for the girls before competing in the South Dakota Tide American Cup Tournament this weekend in Rapid City.
Facing a determined Dakota Valley defense, Vermillion struggled early to create scoring opportunities. Carly Bernard opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a smash into the net from a run up the left side. After seeing three shots hit the woodwork, Katie McNeely completed the first half scoring with a well-placed shot low into the net from 15 yards away.
Former Dakota Valley player and current USD athlete Jamie Strong completed the Vermillion scoring late in the second half to seal the victory for Vermillion. Vermillion outshot Dakota Valley 26-5 on the match, but struggled to find the net all evening. Goalkeepers Natasha Peton and Katie McNeely combined in goal to earn the shutout.
