University will host track and field camps The University of South Dakota track and field program will offer hurdles, pole vault, sprint, and pre-season camps and the DakotaDome during June and July.
Under the direction of Terri Scott, USD track and field staff will host a two-day hurdle camp June 24-25, focusing on the 5 S's of hurdling (speed, strength, skill, stamina and suppleness). Specific emphasis will be placed on speed development and hurdles technique. All registrants will receive a T-shirt, The Little Book of Hurdles and plenty of hurdling.
Practice sessions will be held in the DakotaDome. USD will provide all practice equipment while registrants will provide practice clothing and running shoes. Athletic trainers will be on-hand for the camp session. Meals and housing will be provided by USD.
Campers need to provide their own linens, shower supplies and swimsuits. Registrants must enclose a non-refundable deposit of $75 with a registration form (checks payable to USD Track and Field Camp).
A pole vault camp, which will be led by Derek Miles, will also be held June 24-25. Miles is a 2000 Olympics Trials qualifier and was ranked 10th in the U.S. during the 2000 indoor season. The camp will focus on current information on the proper training guidelines for in season and off-season, drills for speed and vault technique, gymnastics, video analysis and more. Registrants must provide jump shoes (spikes), practice wear, bedding, pillows, shower supplies, swimsuits, and poles. Registrants must enclose a non-refundable deposit of $75 with a registration form (checks payable to USD Track and Field Camp).
A sprint camp, which will be conducted by USD head women's track and field coach Lucky Huber, will be held June 24. This camp will focus on speed development for all jumpers and sprinters. The camp will provide information on proper running technique, how to train for speed and become faster, how to become stronger and to become more successful in a specific event.
Huber has coached over 50 all-Americans and multiple NCAA national champions in the sprint and jumps. He has coached the Coyotes to five conference championships in the last six years and a second place finish in the 1998 NCAA national championships. Registrants must provide their own athletic apparel and running spikes. Registration cost $60 and includes lunch and a T-shirt.
The track and field program will also hold a pre-season camp on July 29 at the DakotaDome. This camp's main focus will be on developing the athletes, specifically in areas of strength, quickness and agility.
