Beresford, Post #1 meet in special 9-inning game In a special nine-inning scheduled game Beresford took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning, but the game was tied 4-4 by Vermillion's Post #1 Legion team in the sixth, then Beresford fell apart in the seventh, giving up 10 runs to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Played at Prentis Park in Vermillion on Friday, June 30, it was meant to give the teams an opportunity to become acclimated to a nine-inning experience since the regional tournament will involve all nine-inning games.
Drew Lawrence started the game and was relieved by Dan Tolsma in the sixth when Beresford scored three runs aided by three walks, a base hit and a hit batter. Lawrence had held Beresford to one run on two hits through the first five innings, striking out six.
Tolsma shut down the Beresford team the rest of the way and was credited with the win.
Scoring stats for Post #1 were: Adam Brooks � four for four hits, four runs, three RBIs, and a solo HR; Steven Varns � two for five hits, two runs; Dan Holoch � four for four, one run, four RBIs; Tim Broderson � one for three, two runs, three RBIs; Todd Anderson � two for five, one run, two RBIs; Tyler Vacek and Jason Madsen each scored a run; Dan Tolsma � two for four, two runs, two RBIs.
The seventh inning "onslaught" was the result of nine hits, one base on balls, a hit batsman and an error, giving the Post #1 team 10 runs! The rally started with a Vacek double, Varns' single, Broderson HBP, Anderson single, Tolsma single, etc. Thirteen batters went to the plate!
