Fans of The University of South Dakota women's basketball program have good things to look forward to when the team's new season begins.

Chad Lavin, the Coyotes' head coach, told Rotarians Tuesday that a more seasoned squad will be on the court later this year. "We played six of our top seven freshmen last year, and we finished 11-16," Lavin said. "It was a learning experience for our coaches and players."

He added that Coyote standout Kelly Gese, who missed last season because of a knee injury, will return to the playing floor. Lavin is also excited about three new additions to the team roster. "We've signed two kids from Sioux Falls Roosevelt, and a kid from Tulare."

Lavin is proud of the squad's competitive spirit, both on and off the basketball court. "Last year, we had a 3.4 team GPA academically," he told the Rotarians. "They are competitive in the classroom."

Lavin first coached women's basketball at USD from 1982 to 1985. During that time, he guided the Coyotes to three consecutive North Central Conference basketball championships. This upcoming season marks his third year (seventh overall) as coach of the USD women.

Things have changed for the better from the early 1980s to today. "When I first coached, women's basketball was not well attended," he said. "To come back and see that crowd support the past two years has been phenomenal I couldn't ask for more support."
