FSA Notes By Keith Zanter The major changes for MCI crop insurance on alfalfa include: optional units are now available; automatic winter coverage (a separate endorsement is not required); non-irrigated alfalfa, alfalfa grass, grass alfalfa, irrigated alfalfa and irrigated alfalfa grass are insurable in all counties.

The coverage levels are your choice of 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, or 75 percent of your average yield. There is a choice of 60 to 100 percent of the maximum price election of $63/ton for alfalfa and alfalfa/grass mix and $46/ton for grass/alfalfa mix.

Dates to remember are the sales closing date and cancellation/termination date of Sept. 30. The acreage reporting date is Nov. 15 or the acreage reporting date is May 22 for spring seeded following the year of seeding.

Insured forage consists of planted perennial alfalfa, perennial red clover, perennial grasses, or a mixture thereof, provided the insurability requirements are met. Contact your crop insurance agent for insurability requirements.

The insurance period begins on acreage with an adequate stand on May 22 following the year of seeding for spring seeded acreage and Oct. 16 following the year of seeding for fall seeded acreage. Insurance ends the earliest of total destruction of the forage crop; removal from the windrow or field for each cutting; the date grazing commences on the forage crop or Oct. 15, 2001.
