Alexis Lang performs in state honors choir Approximately 150 of South Dakota's finest high school vocalists presented the 27th annual South Dakota Honors Choir concerton Friday, Aug. 4, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center theater on the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen.
High school students selected to participate in the honors choir include Alexis Lang of Vermillion.
Dr. Timothy Woods, NSU assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, served as chairperson for this year's honors choir event. The event was sponsored by the South Dakota American Choral Directors Association.
Honors choir members were selected throughout South Dakota by individual competitive auditions. In preparation for the concert, the group spent the week before the concert in intensive rehearsals on Northern's campus with guest conductor Dr. Andr Thomas, director of choral activities and professor of choral music education at Florida State University School of Music.
In his second appearance with the South Dakota Honors Choir, Thomas is frequently in demand as a choral adjudicator, clinician and director of honor choirs and all state choirs throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. He was selected by the International Federation of Choral Directors Association to conduct the 1998 World Youth Choir.
Thomas has distinguished himself as a composer and arranger and has been honored with awards including the University Award for Excellence in Teaching and two Distinguished Service Awards.
