Local Lutherans attend Global Mission Event Morris and Edith Ellison of Dalesburg Lutheran Church were among hundreds of mission-minded Lutherans who attended the Global Mission Event (GME) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) July 20-23 at Luther College, Decorah, IA, under the theme "Pray in the Spirit at All Times." Luther College is a higher education institute of the ELCA.
The event provided opportunities for people to learn about global and local mission, participate in Bible studies, attend a variety of workshops, hear inspirational speakers and enjoy music and food from around the world. The event was sponsored by the ELCA Division for Global Mission with the support of other ELCA units. Local volunteer committees working with the division helped organize the GME.
The GME featured a display known as the "ELCA Mission History and Research Project," with material from the ELCA Archives and Records Center, Elk Grove Village, IL. The displays included photographs of the Lutheran church's work in mission and some of its missionaries from the 20th century. Participants contributed material for the displays.
In addition to worship and plenary sessions, numerous workshops and seminars known as "Global University Sessions" were highlights of the Global Mission Event. Topics included evangelism and outreach in the new century, the global community and church, women's issues, new missionary opportunities, new forms of music in worship, ministry with seafarers, the church's response to the AIDS crisis in Africa and world hunger issues.
Workshop presenters were from North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia.
GlobalFest was another highlight of the GME. It featured interactive exhibits, stage presentations, music, dance and dress from various parts of the world. GlobalFest was led by missionaries, international students and others in mission work for the church.
