Willroth aces hole during Pro-Am by M. Jill Karolevitz Bill Willroth Jr., Vermillion, aced the #6 hole Friday, Aug. 4 during the 27th annual Hillcrest Pro-Am golf tournament in Yankton.
Willroth was among the four area amateur golfers, including Jon Dimmick and Ellis Jensen of Vermillion, and Jim Morrison of Wakonda, who participated in the tournament which ran Aug. 3-6.
Willroth, who finished the amateur division of the tournament in sixth place at 301 for the four days, made the 191-yard hole-in-one shot with a five iron. The following day, Mark Casey of Yankton aced the same hole, also with a five iron.
As the tournament ended, Dimmick tied for 15th in the amateur division with 310 for the four days.
Curt Tate of Omaha, NE, was the amateur winner at 280. The former all-Big 8 golfer for the University of Nebraska has won the tourney two other times and has finished second twice.
Rob Kortan, Spearfish, finished second at 287 this year, followed by John Peters of Muscatine, IA, with 296. Kevin Gilster, Coppell, TX, placed fourth in the amateur division at 297.
Bob Lucas, Maple Grove, MN, won the amateur net division.
Paul Wackerly of Canton, OH, was the professional winner. He finished the final day with a 65, 17 under, 271 for the four days. Curt Berggren, Cedar Falls, IA, finished three shots back with a 274. John Dalzell, Phoenix, AZ, shot 276 for the four days, and Todd Rose, Fresno, CA, finished at 12 under, 276.
