Area firefighters aid efforts in Black Hills by M. Jill Karolevitz Vermillion Fire Chief Doug Brunick returned home Tuesday, Aug. 29 after heading to the Black Hills with five other men early Sunday morning to help battle the fire raging west of Custer.
�I got a call from the state fire marshall�s office at 1 a.m. Sunday requesting assistance and a pumper,� Brunick said.
Brunick and Terry Bernard from Vermillion, Doug Cavanaugh and Mark Holmes from Elk Point, and Mike Pollman and Kevin Hahn from Wakonda, answered the call.
�Monday we spent most of the time at the Boy Scout Camp with five other units, ready to protect it if necessary,� Brunick said. �Our job out there is mostly structural support.�
Brunick�s crew was relieved Tuesday, Aug. 29 by Chuck Taggart, Mark Taggart and Bill Sperry of Vermillion, and Doug Hessman of Wakonda.
As of Aug. 30, the fire had burned 70,150 acres, and although good progress had been made the previous day in firefighting efforts, the flames continued to burn, according to information provided by the governor�s office.
