Arts Center offers programs The University of South Dakota Art Education Department and the Vermillion Area Arts Council are continuing their program of arts experiences for youth on Sunday afternoons, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5.

All classes are held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Arts Center, 202 Washington Street.

The project brings together arts educators/graduate students, Ruth and Joel McKinney, with USD art education students who will provide instruction and supervision. The experiences are intended to offer reasonable creative adventures for Vermillion area youth and to provide practical, hands-on experience for future arts educators. Dennis Navrat, who heads the art education department, fully endorses the project.

"Collaborative efforts between the university and the community are an important part of our mission. We are pleased to be a part of this program and for the opportunities it provides USD students and community young people," he said.

Class sessions will be offered for youth in grades K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. Activities include making clay pots, illustrating stories, simple printmaking, drawing, painting, making puzzles, weaving, kite and mask making, paper folding, and creating puppets. A family hour for parents and friends follows from 5 to 6 p.m. when art works may be viewed and complimentary snacks enjoyed.

Class fees are $5 for first child in a family and $2 for each additional child in the same family. Classes fill quickly and only a limited number may be accommodated � for more information and to register, call Ruth McKinney at 677-6580 or leave a message at the arts council, 624-4342.

The program is supported through arts education funds provided by the Vermilion United Way and Vermillion Area Arts Council members.
