The cast of Up with People performs the grand finale of its presentation of "A Common Beat" Sunday in the Vermillion High School gymnasium. Sweltering heat couldn't stop attendance by a capacity audience, nor lessen the highly-charged musical and dance numbers of Up with People's cast of 140 young people from around the world. The troupe performed heritage dance and vocals as well as contemporary sounds and movements from the African, U.S., Hispanic, Asian, Western and Eastern European cultures. The premise of "A Common Beat" is the development of cultures over the years through different stages of conflict and collaboration. As the story develops, the world's people begin to move and create unique cultures, causing curiosity, fear and conflict. The show moves into a festive finale that is a celebration of cultural understanding.
