Peter A. "Pete" Christensen, 79, of Vermillion died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, IA.
Services were held Sept. 21 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Judith Johnson officiating. Burial was in BluffView Cemetery. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Christensen was born June 21, 1921, in Clay County, to Peter and Christine Christensen. He graduated in 1939 from Vermillion High School.
He married Eleanor LingBerg on Feb. 29, 1952, in Elk Point. He was a longtime Clay County farmer. He retired from farming and moved into Vermillion in 1987.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, was a 50-year Mason, and was a longtime member of the Vermillion Eagle's Club. He served as an ASCS committeeman for 18 years, two terms with the FHA, and was a director of Farm Mutual Insurance Co. for 21 years.
Survivors include his wife: Eleanor of Vermillion; a daughter and her husband: Judy and Jim Peters of Dell Rapids; three sons: David Morris and his wife, Jacqueline of Herando Beach, FL, Scott Christensen of Rock Springs, WY, and Clark Christensen and his wife, Deb of Vermillion; a sister: Martha Anderson of Lincoln, NE; a sister-in-law: Marge Christensen of Vermillion; a brother-in-law: Lawrence Melancon of San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
John W. Armstrong, 75, of Vermillion died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.
Funeral services will be Sept. 23 at Faith Fellowship of the Open Bible Church in Vermillion at 2 p.m. There will be a prayer service at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Burial will be in BluffView Cemetery.
Mr. Armstrong was born in Vermillion on May 17, 1925. He attended Vermillion schools. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific during World War II for three years.
He married Mary Ruth Steele on June 10, 1948 in Meckling. His primary interest was his family and second was his horses. He enjoyed giving horse and wagon rides for parades, church outings and weddings.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Ruth; a daughter: Mary Lee Sondergard of Auburn, CA; a son: John Wayne of Sioux City, IA; five grandchildren; four brothers: Francis of Vermillion, Robert of Louisville, KY, Donald of Pierre, and Clare of Spearfish; and one sister: Helynn Carrier of San Jose, CA. Many friends, relatives and neighbors also mourn his death.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Faye, when she was 4 1/2 years old, and his parents John Randolph and Helen Armstrong.
