Tanager girls' soccer improves record to 7-2 The #3 ranked Vermillion Tanager girls' soccer team improved its record to 7-2 with victories over Belle Fourche and Lead-Deadwood last Saturday in Sioux Falls.
The Tanagers defeated Belle Fourche by a score of 7-1, and tallied a 7-0 victory over Lead-Deadwood in the second match of the day.
Dominating play in both games, the Tanagers allowed only five shots on the day. Belle Fourche scored on a fluke ball sent into an undefended Tanager net after the referee attempted to call a stoppage for an injury.
The outstanding wing play of the Tanagers again resulted in frequent crosses into the penalty area. The Tanagers demonstrated diversity on attack by combining the wing play with buildup in the midfield to create penetration through the center of the defense.
Kelly Peterson and Sandy Winckler led the team in scoring on the day with four goals and three goals, respectively. Captain Lana Johnson added two goals, while adding one goal apiece were Amy Petekavich, Brittany Sand, Mary Nelson, Tashawa Peton and Nicole Peton.
The Tanagers travel to Watertown this Saturday for matches with Watertown and West Central.
