Tanager JV victorious after forcing overtime

Tanager JV victorious after forcing overtime by Jim Prosser Nicki Whitman tied the game at 29 with a lay-up to send it into overtime with seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Dakota Valley High School Panthers 34-29 in an overtime battle in girls' basketball Aug. 24 at Dakota Valley.

The score was tied 29-29 after regulation.

"Whitman then hit a 3-pointer in overtime to give us the lead and Abby Moore clinched the game with an offensive rebound and basket," said Tanager JV Coach Troy Terronez of the clinching moment.

Dakota Valley pressed the first half, forced some turnovers, and held Vermillion to 4 points. Vermillion countered in the second half with a press of their own to swing the momentum and to spark the offense.

"Our intensity was low and we weren't being patient in the first half," said Coach Terronez. "The press got the adrenaline flowing and the girls fed the ball inside offensively. That was the difference in the two halves."

The Tanagers fell behind 8-3 after the opening period, trailed 12-5 after the second period, and then trailed 20-13 after the third quarter.

The Tanager JV improved its record to 1-1, while Dakota Valley dropped to 0-1.

The Tanager JV sank 7 of 17 from the line while the Panthers hit 1 of 3 free throw attempts.

Several individual efforts helped in the win.

"Whitney Tolsma and Alison Stewart controlled the boards for us while Abby Moore and Nicki Whitman sparked us on the offensive end," Coach Terronez said. "Ashley Hofer also brought the ball up the court to set the offense for us."
