Tanagers view loss as a chance to learn by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Sioux Falls Lincoln Patriots 43-16 in girls basketball Sept. 9 at home.
I thought this was a good learning experience for the girls to play against a sophomore team, said VHS freshmen Coach Chris Fehring. We did do some nice things at times, but we still have a lot to learn.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 27 turnovers.
The Tanagers fell behind 6-2 at the end of the first period, trailed 18-5 at halftime, and then trailed 33-9 going into the final period.
The loss dropped VHS freshmen to a record of 1-3, while Lincoln freshman improved to 4-1.
VHS freshmen hit 2 of 12 free throw attempts while the Patriots connected on 4 of 13 from the line.
Even with the final margin, the Tanagers had some solid individual efforts.
I give a lot of credit to all the girls for not giving up, Coach Fehring said. Our team kept fighting all the way to the final buzzer. Towards the end, the guards had some nice passes into the posts, and the posts took them strong and scored. Now we just have to learn to go strong for the entire game.
