United Way Spotlight An agency which receives funding from United Way of Vermillion will be featured in this spotlight each week. The United Way of Vermillion Board of Directors wants you, the people of Vermillion, to know more about the agencies that receive United Way funding and the services which they provide to the Vermillion community.
The 2001 United Way campaign will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the new USD Alumni/Foundation building on north Dakota Street with the "Taste of Vermillion" celebration which is open to the public. Come let United Way of Vermillion and Vermillion's restaurants treat you to delicious culinary creations. Join the United Way in thanking the volunteers who have given of their time to enhance past campaign efforts and in kicking off the new campaign.
This week's featured agency is the Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence which is a non-profit organization committed to ending family violence in our community. Staffed by volunteers, VCADV provides free, confidential services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Some of the services available from VCADV are emergency shelter, food, clothing, health care, transportation, criminal justice support, mental health counseling, support group, parenting education, job referral, and child care. All of these services are delivered in the Vermillion community. Anyone needing any of these services can contact the Coalition by calling 624-5311 or by writing to the Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence at P.O. Box 144, Vermillion.
In the past calendar year, VCADV has provided assistance to 307 persons. Of these people, VCADV has provided physical shelter to one man, 10 women, and 21 children for a total of 645 shelter days.
Community education is a large part of the mission of the coalition. Last year VCADV brought educational programs to the Vermillion High School, St. Agnes School, The University of South Dakota, Jolley School, and various civic and religious organizations.
In addition to programs, many educational videos, books, and brochures are available through the coalition at no cost to the user.
The Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence is proud to be a United Way Agency and cooperates closely with other community service providers in an attempt to make Vermillion a progressive and safe community in which to live.
