VHS cross country teamscompete in Madison meet On a hot and humid day 10 schools were represented at Madison's earlybird meet, Friday, Aug. 25 with competition in both boys' and girls' divisions, varsity, JV and middle school.
First runner across the finish line was Vermillion's Eric Dehner with a time of 15:57.1.
No team points were kept but other Tanager placers in the top 10 were: Darryl Neufeld, seventh, and Tyler Brown, ninth. Also placing at 16th was Ben Parsons, at 22nd Paul Timms, and at 38th Josh Kyte.
For the girls, Jaime Erger from Sioux Falls Lincoln was first and Tanager placers were: Angie Rydell, seventh, Natalie Tuetken, ninth, and Megan Griffith, 17th. Following at 20th and 22nd were Beth Pier and Theresa Ring in that order.
JV boys finishers for the Tanagers were: Tom Smith, sixth, Justin Manning, seventh, Wilber Lio, 19th, Ben Williams, 28th and at 30th, Mitch Bierle.
JV girls finishing for Vermillion were: Nicki Mollet, ninth, Emily Pier, 11th, Morgan Hollingsworth, 16th, and Carly Bernard, 18th.
The middle school division had only one Vermillion participant in the boys' section, Danny Redlin, who finished 10th.
The Vermillion girls were represented in the middle school section by three top 10 placers. Morgan Brooks was first, Katie Dehner was second, and Sarah Plate was eighth in the 34-member group of runners.
Schools competing were Arlington, Chester, Garretson, Harrisburg, Howard, Madison, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Sioux Valley, Vermillion and West Central. While Lincoln dominated the meet, the Tanagers gave a good account of themselves in both divisions.
Coach Dave Dannenbring has a contingent of 30 girls and boys on the Vermillion team.
"We had a very solid effort from both boys' and girls' teams," he said. "They competed well and we are pleased with their training and conditioning at this point of the season."
