VHS girls' tennis team drops opening match The Tanager girls' tennis team faced one of the top tennis teams in the high school ranks and suffered a close 6-3 loss to the Yankton Gazelles in the season opener for the Tanagers.
The competition was postponed from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22 and played at Yankton instead of at Vermillion.
Coach Barb Rickord has 24 girls competing for 12 slots on the varsity and JV lineups. At present she has eight potential starters for the #1 through #6 positions and about six for the JVs.
Team Scores: Yankton 6, Vermillion 3.
Singles: Maya Ristic (V) def. Kyna Williams 10-4; Lindsay Iverson (V) def. Brittany Wilson 10-7; Abby Washburn (Y) def. Tori Collins 10-7; Erin Stanage (Y) def. Justine Reimnitz 10-7; Catherine Odson (V) def. Jennifer Muller 10-5; Jessica Mathison (Y) def. Jessica Leffers 10-8. All were very close matches!
"It was a very good opening match for us," said coach Rickord. "Maya and Lindsay both looked very strong in winning at #1 and #2 singles and the other four girls also played very well for their first varsity matches. We hope, with more practice, that we can improve and things will go the other way when we next play Yankton."

Odson 10-8; Mathison/ Muller (Y) def. Reimnitz/Leffers 11-10 (7-5).
In JV singles Deanna Russell was a winner, and in JV doubles the pairing of Britt Fremstad and Deanna Russell were victorious.
Coach Rickord also cited the following as team starters � Elizabeth Slagle, Lisa Doohen,
Michelle Rydell, Jenna Williams and Rhiannon Chandler.
The next two matches have the Tanagers entertaining Madison on Sept. 5 and playing
again at Yankton on Sept. 7.
