VHS JV is victim of second half rally by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanager junior varsity fell victim to a second-half rally and were defeated by the Beresford High School Watchdogs 40-33 in girls' basketball Sept. 5 at home.
The Tanager JV had led by two at halftime.
Abby Moore scored 23 points and pulled in 11 rebounds.
"Abby Moore had an outstanding performance inside the paint," said Tanager JV Coach Troy Terronez. "She was our go-to girl throughout most of the game."
The Tanagers jumped ahead 9-8 after the opening period, led 19-17 at halftime, and then trailed 29-24 going into the fourth quarter.
"We played consistently throughout the game, with the exception of the third quarter," said Coach Terronez. "We take that quarter away, and we have an even game."
The loss dropped the Tanager JV to a record of 1-3, while the Beresford junior varsity improved to 3-1.
The Tanager JV connected on 7 of 20 free throw tries while the Watchdogs hit 10 of 20 free throw attempts.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
"Tera Dehner came in as a freshman to complement our inside game," Coach Terronez said. "She played just as physical as anyone else on the court."
