Hanson named director of USD Media Relations

Hanson named director of USD Media Relations The University of South Dakota has announced that Shirlee Hanson is the new director of media relations in the Office of University Relations at USD, pending approval by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

As director of media relations, Hanson will be the key media liaison for USD, write and edit news releases, take photographs, and be the editor of the USD monthly newsletter, the Aviso. She was hired to replace Dan Genzler, who was appointed as the new sports information director for the USD athletic department in July.

"We are pleased to have Shirlee joining our office because she brings a diverse background to media relations," said Vice President Roger Kozak. "Shirlee's knowledge of South Dakota and the region will enhance the effectiveness of the University's Media Relations Office."

Hanson brings with her knowledge of the newsroom as the former editor of The Brandon Valley Challenger. She also owned and published the Watertown Area Now magazine for six years.

Currently Hanson is teaching mass communication theories in the mass communication department and taking courses in technology, training and development in the USD School of Education. She is also working toward her doctorate in information technology at USD.

As a lifelong resident of South Dakota, Hanson has received all three of her degrees from South Dakota schools. She has a BA in business from Mount Marty College, a BS in journalism from South Dakota State University, and an MA in mass communication from USD. She is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha National Honor Society in journalism and mass communication as well as Alpha Delta Sigma Honor Society of the American Advertising Federation.

Hanson served as president-elect of the Watertown Kiwanis Club in 1995, and Loaned Executive of the Watertown United Way in 1996.
