Tanager soccer girls defeat #1 Roosevelt Roughriders In a match that featured the #1 and #3 rated teams in the state, the Vermillion Tanager girls' soccer team defeated the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Roughriders by a score of 2-1 last Thursday night in Sioux Falls.
The Tanagers opened the scoring in the seventh minute when striker Mandy Winckler collected a low cross from Elly Kjose and slammed a first-touch shot into the far corner of the net. A shot into the net by Sandy Winckler from a rebound of a shot by Kelly Peterson was disallowed by the assistant referee on a questionable offsides call.
Roosevelt mounted a furious attack throughout the game, often sending as many as eight attackers forward in an effort to penetrate the Tanager defense. Defensive midfielders Brittany Sand and Tara Job put forth a supreme effort in denying combination play by the Riders, and left defensive back Jenna Gilkyson fended off several Roosevelt attackers in the first half.
Following a 1-1 halftime tie, the Tanagers increased their intensity in the midfield and shutdown the air attack of Roosevelt. The Riders probed the right side of the Tanager defense on the ground, only to be repeatedly thwarted by the determination and speed of Kjose and Amy Petekavich.
The winning goal was scored by the Tanagers with four minutes left in the match when Natasha Peton collected a ball from midfielder Lana Johnson and found herself one against one with a Roosevelt defender. Peton showed extreme composure in playing a touch to her right to gain shooting space, followed by a blast into the net past the goalkeeper.
Sophomore Dru VanKley was in goal for the Tanagers.
