USD crowns royalty trio The University of South Dakota's 2000 homecoming coronation brought an extra surprise for the candidates and crowd in attendance.
Royalty that traditionally includes a king and a queen, has two queens this year because of a tie in the voting.
The winners were announced at the Capers and Coronation Production on Friday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. in Slagle Hall Auditorium. The shared title of Ms. Dakota was bestowed upon Kim VanDeventer, and Tara Creighton. Mr. Dakota is Ross Wright.
Mr. Dakota and the two Ms. Dakotas presided over the 10 a.m. Dakota Days parade and the 2 p.m. football game against University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Jill Drake, USD Program Council advisor for Dakota Days was also surprised at the tie in voting. "I believe this is the first time in USD history that we have had two queens at homecoming," she said. "The students vote through an ID system that keeps people from voting twice or stacking their votes. I guess they just had a tougher choice this year because of how wonderful all of the candidates were."
