Vermillion quilter offers quilt class in Yankton Quilters in the Yankton area have the unique opportunity to make the "America Forever" quilt, an original design by Mary Waller of Vermillion.
This patriotic sampler quilt is being offered for the first time in a year-long class at Four Seasons Fabric in Yankton.
Waller attended the International Quilt Market in Minneapolis in May, along with Misty Winter Nockels, owner of Four Seasons Fabric. Waller and Nockels were inspired by many fabrics featuring Americana and patriotic themes debuted at this event for professionals in the quilt industry.
Waller's "America Forever" quilt features 13 original and traditional designs in its field and borders. Quilt blocks were designed and selected to represent southeastern South Dakota and with patriotic themes. Waller's original designs include a flying eagle, waving flag, airplane and "2000." Traditional designs include the liberty star, star of the west, sailboat and other star designs.
Waller selected and designed blocks using different sewing techniques, so class participants will learn a wide variety of skills.
"All the basic techniques are covered, including four-, five- and eight-pointed stars, three ways to work with triangles and foundation piecing and a few simple curves," Waller said.
A sample of Waller's "America Forever" quilt is on display at Four Seasons Fabric. The class to make this quilt begins Thursday, Oct. 12 at 5:45 p.m. and meets the second Thursday of each month.
Waller has been designing quilts and teaching sewing and quilting since 1991. She has taught at regional and national conferences. Waller is profiled in the National Quilting Association's Fall 2000 journal for her work drafting patterns from antique quilts using computer drafting programs.
