Historical society to host Christmas Tour of Homes The Clay County Historical Society will conduct its annual Christmas Tour of Homes on Friday, Dec. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m.
This year, six homes will be available to tour: Ross and Sandy Dickenson, Alan and Maxine Johnson, Cleo and Norris Erickson, Betty and Larry Smith, Jeff and Suzanne Grover and Holly Straub.
"Anytime during or after the tour you may return to the decorated Austin Whittemore House for champagne, coffee and seasonal goodies," said Cleo Erickson, president of the Clay County Historical Society.
The baked goods are furnished by Clay County Historical Society members, many of whom are recognized for their baking and culinary skill.
The cost of the event is $15 per person and tickets are available at Deb's Hallmark, Nook 'N Cranny, Vermillion Beauty Shop and the Austin Whittemore House.
The event is the Clay County Historical Society's single most important fund raiser each year. The funds raised go into the general fund and are used for upkeep of the Austin Whittemore House.
Increasingly the Austin Whittemore House is used for genealogy studies, but its most enduring impression remains with Vermillion's first-graders whose pilgrimage to the house, and in particular to the cupola, is one of the highlights of spring at the house.
