Local dancers are cast in The Nutcracker Ballet The Dakota Dance Association of Yankton will present Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Ballet on Dec. 8, 9 and 10 at the Yankton High School Auditorium at 180 Summit Street, Yankton.
Friday evening's performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, performances will be held at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The final performance on Sunday will begin at 2 p.m.
This year's holiday tradition of the Nutcracker features 180 cast members. One of these is Jonathon Powell, a high school senior who lives in State College, PA. Powell is cast as the Nutcracker prince. He has extensive ballet background which includes studying at the Joffrey Ballet in New York City this past summer under a full scholarship.
The candy cane dancers and harp angels are new roles in this year's production. A new Christmas tree backdrop has been added and was created by USD professor Tim Case and his students.
Nancy Abbott, Vermillion, is a Garland candy dancer and older mother Ginger child. She is a seventh-grader. Emily Miller, Wakonda, is a dream fairy and a Russian dancer. She is an eighth-grader.
The director for this year's Nutcracker is Terry Winter, an instructor at Yankton High School with an extensive theatre background. Dorota Dannenbring, Yankton, is the choreographer. She is a graduate of the Conservatory of Dance in Warsaw, Poland.
Tickets go on sale at the Yankton Mall, 2101 Broadway, near the fountain by JC Penny beginning on Friday, Nov. 24 from 1 to 9 p.m. Tickets are also on sale from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and Mondays through Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. between Nov. 25 through Dec. 7.
Tickets may be purchased by stopping at the mall during these sale hours.
