Obituaries Nora 'Myrtle' Jensen
Funeral services for Myrtle Kronen Jensen were Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor James Olson officiating. Burial followed in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Visitation was at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel on Sunday from noon until 9 p.m. and Monday prior to the services.
A memorial has been established to the Meade County Senior Citizen's Center.
Mrs. Jensen died at her home in Bloomington, CA, on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at the age of 100.
She was born in Lyman County on Jan. 9, 1900, to Martin and Selma (Nelson) Helgeson. She married Pat Jensen at Vermillion, on March 18, 1922. Mrs. Jensen lived in Vermillion for a number of years and moved to Sturgis in the mid-1950s. She moved to California five years ago.
For many years, she worked as a shipping clerk for the South Dakota Chemistry Lab at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
Survivors include three sons: Lauris Jensen, Kingsley, IA, Kenneth Jensen, Redding CA, and Robert Jensen, Bloomington, CA; two daughters: Faye Bartlett, Lone Star, TX, and Dorothy Decker, Bloomington, CA; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Roger during WWII, five sisters and three brothers.
She was a member of the Meade County Senior Citizens and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Arnold N. Nelson, 82, of Burbank, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital in Vermillion.
He was born Jan. 24, 1918 in Volin to Nels and Carrie Nelson. He attended the Bethel Country School near Wakonda, and had to leave school to help on the family farm during the Depression.
He married Beverly Druin on March 6, 1955 in Vermillion. They lived in Vermillion, and he retired from the sheriff's department in 1980, where he had worked as a Clay County sheriff. His wife Beverly died in 1979.
He married Mary Lemmer on Feb. 16, 1980 in Vermillion.
He was a member of the Vermillion Eagles and Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Nelson of Burbank; a son: Paul of Vermillion; and four daughters: Deb and Charles Kavanaugh of Rapid City, Rhonda and Jeff Guge of Omaha, NE, Karen Griffith of Graham, WA, and Kathy Hilken of Woodinville, WA. He is also survived by three step-children: Rose and Dan Hammer of Sioux Falls, Janice and Mike Huchenberg of Appleton, WI, and Tom and Rene Lemmer of Schofield, WI. Also surviving him are 12 grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly, a son, Bradley, a sister, Esther Bratty, and a brother, Clarence Nelson.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with burial in BluffView Cemetery, Vermillion. Visitation was at 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 6, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.
