Vermillion team places 1st in high school math contest

Vermillion team places 1st in high school math contest Two outstanding high school seniors won $500 scholarships to attend South Dakota State University at the 21st annual SDSU High School Math Contest Saturday, Nov. 4.

They are Sarah Landau, a Brookings High School student, and Ashley Moser, a Lake Preston High School student.

The math competition included individual and cooperative team contests in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry. Each team consisted of three to five members who worked together to solve challenging problems.

Vermillion High School (team #1) won the first-place trophy with members Tim Goodman, Jon Rusch, Mark Vickrey and Ben Williams.

Vermillion High School (team #2) placed second with members Craig Bierle, Chris Hayes, Titiana Miller, Dan Ring and Mark Rusch.

Bon Homme High School in Springfield placed third.

Individual winners in Algebra I were Mark Werner of Brookings High School, first; Jieny Li, Brookings High School, second; and Micah Holzbauer, BOLD High School, Olivia, MN, third.

In Geometry the winners were Ashley Muser of Lake Preston High School, first, and Jon Rusch, Vermillion High School, and Ingrid Yu, Brookings High School, tied for second.

Winners in Algebra II were Sarah Landau, Brookings High School, first; Ben Williams of Vermillion High School, second; and Dan Ring, Vermillion High School, third.

Brookings High School had the highest composite score. This allowed them to take the traveling trophy home with them. The second place composite was Bon Homme High School, Springfield. BOLD High School from Olivia placed third.

High school math coaches were: Steve Keppen, Brookings; Anita Boeck, Arlington High School; Richard, Ritter, Lake Preston, Linda Paulson, Vermillion; Owen Holzbauer, BOLD High School, Olivia; Jim Goehring, Bon Homme High School, Springfield.
