Vets memorial program set November 11 Dedication ceremonies will begin at 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11 for the new Clay County Veterans Memorial, located on the grounds of the county courthouse in Vermillion.
Clay County Veterans Service Officer David Wherry will serve as master of ceremonies at the event. The invocation will be given by the Rev. Wilbur Tiahart.
USD's ROTC Company will raise the memorial's national and state flags, followed by Wendy Pederson singing The Star Spangled Banner. The VFW firing squad will raise the five service flags, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Scout Andy Knutson.
Featured speaker will be Vermillion Mayor William Radigan, who also is chairman of the Clay County Veterans Memorial Committee.
Other speakers include local American Legion Commander Richard Barta and Auxiliary President Evelyn Hermanson, and VFW Quartermaster Leonard Bottolfson and Auxiliary President Opal Smith.
The program will close with Pederson singing a medley of the armed services songs, a benediction by the Rev. Elmer Aakre, a salute by the VFW firing squad and Taps by Carla Gonyo.
