Voters cast ballots Tuesday by M. Jill Karolevitz With the Gore/Bush presidential race up in the air nationally, pending the Florida vote recount, South Dakota, District 17 and Clay County winners are clear-cut after the Nov. 7 election.

The unofficial election totals are summarized below:

President

The nation still does not have a new president. Fewer than 1700 votes separated Bush and Gore in Florida as of Wednesday morning and a recount was ordered. A formal canvass of the Florida ballots could take up to 10 days. As of Wednesday morning, unofficial local totals for the presidential election were:

Republican — George W. Bush: Total Clay County votes 2363.

Democrat — Al Gore: Total Clay County votes 2638.

Reform — Pat Buchanan: Total Clay County votes 31.

Libertarian — Browne: Total Clay County votes 52.

Independent — Phillips: Total Clay County votes 21.

Other statewide and local election results (unofficial) are:

U.S. Representative

Republican — John Thune: Total Clay County votes 3290; total South Dakota votes 230,176.

Democrat — Curt Hohn: Total Clay County votes 1660; total South Dakota votes 78,105.

Libertarian — Brian Lerohl: Total Clay County votes 118; total South Dakota votes 5349.

Public Utilities Commissioner

Republican — Laska Schoenfelder: Total Clay County votes 2316; total South Dakota votes 170,333.

Democrat — Arnie Laubach: Total Clay County votes 2505; total South Dakota votes 133,450.

District 17 State Senate

Republican — Donna Schafer: Total votes 3837.

Democrat — John Reedy: Total votes 3976.

District 17 State House (Vote for two)

Republican — H. Junior Engbrecht: Total votes 3552.

Republican — Judy Clark: Total votes 4209.

Democrat — B.J. Nesselhuf: Total votes 3731.

Democrat — Maxine Johnson: Total votes 2758.

Libertarian — Jason Eisenmenger: Total votes 368.

Clay County State's Attorney

Republican — Tami Bern: Total votes 3270.

Independent — Creighton Thurman: Total votes 1577.

Clay County Commission (Vote for three)

Republican — Dick Brown: Total votes 1887.

Republican — Mary Jensen: Total votes 2320.

Republican — William Willroth Sr.: Total votes 2320.

Democrat — Ralph Westergaard: Total votes 2554.

Democrat — Thomas Vogel: Total votes 2212.

Democrat — Heath Nelson: Total votes 2107.

Constitutional Amendments

Amendment A (Classification of property for taxation). A yes vote allows multiple classes of agricultural property for school taxation purposes. A no vote leaves the constitution as it is. Total yes votes in Clay County 2782; Total no votes in Clay County 2009. Total yes votes in South Dakota 166,712; Total no votes in South Dakota 136,711.

Amendment B (Cooperation and organization of local government). A yes vote allows voters to file initiatives which combine, eliminate or jointly finance local offices, functions or governmental units. A no vote leaves the constitution as it is. Total yes votes in Clay County 2809; Total no votes in Clay County 1895. Total yes votes in South Dakota 165,127; Total no votes in South Dakota 133,372.

Amendment C (Inheritance tax). A yes vote repeals the state inheritance tax. A no vote leaves the inheritance tax in place. Total yes votes in Clay County 3789; Total no votes in Clay County 1214. Total yes votes in South Dakota 248,904; Total no votes in South Dakota 62,292.

Amendment D (Video lottery). A yes vote abolishes video lottery. A no vote leaves the video lottery in place. Total yes votes in Clay County 1950; Total no votes in Clay County 3101. Total yes votes in South Dakota 145,174; Total no votes in South Dakota 170,087.

Amendment E (Investing school funds). A yes vote changes the constitution. A no vote leaves the constitution as it is. Total yes votes in Clay County 2866; Total no votes in Clay County 1894. Total yes votes in South Dakota 168,687; Total no votes in South Dakota 131,777.

Initiated Measure 1 (Raising Deadwood bet limits). A yes vote increases the bet limits to $100. A no vote leaves the bet limits at $5. Total yes votes in Clay County 2459; Total no votes in Clay County 2518. Total yes votes in South Dakota 160,910; Total no votes in South Dakota 150,846.

City ordinance
