Voters cast ballots Tuesday by M. Jill Karolevitz With the Gore/Bush presidential race up in the air nationally, pending the Florida vote recount, South Dakota, District 17 and Clay County winners are clear-cut after the Nov. 7 election.
The unofficial election totals are summarized below:
President
The nation still does not have a new president. Fewer than 1700 votes separated Bush and Gore in Florida as of Wednesday morning and a recount was ordered. A formal canvass of the Florida ballots could take up to 10 days. As of Wednesday morning, unofficial local totals for the presidential election were:
Republican — George W. Bush: Total Clay County votes 2363.
Democrat — Al Gore: Total Clay County votes 2638.
Reform — Pat Buchanan: Total Clay County votes 31.
Libertarian — Browne: Total Clay County votes 52.
Independent — Phillips: Total Clay County votes 21.

Republican — John Thune: Total Clay County votes 3290; total South Dakota votes 230,176.
Democrat — Curt Hohn: Total Clay County votes 1660; total South Dakota votes 78,105.
