Barnes is USD Employee of Month for December Dedication, enthusiasm and a cheerful, positive attitude have earned Gloria Barnes of Vermillion the December Career Service Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota.
Barnes, a senior accountant in the Business and Finance Office, was honored during a ceremony Dec. 1 in Slagle Hall. USD President James W. Abbott presented Barnes with a plaque and a check.
"I really enjoy working with people and working with numbers," Barnes said. "My job is the post-award administrator of Grants and Contracts, Fiscal Management in the Accounting Department. I enjoy working with other people and helping them with their grants so that they will continue to write grants and bring those dollars into the university."
Barnes was nominated by Jerald Bartling, manager of Accounting Services.
"Gloria has been the lead person in Grants Accounting since 1985," Bartling said. "She continues to work above and beyond what is required of her position and provides the expertise in the grants accounting area. Gloria has always gone the extra mile in assisting the grant supervisors with their grants and helping them with the requirements of each grant or contract."
Barnes has worked at USD for most of the past 28 years, with intermittent breaks.
"You should always be good and treat your employees with respect," she commented. "I hired Jerry Bartling as my work study, left for a few years and when I came back, Jerry was my supervisor and still is. We've been together for 23 years. There are a lot of long-time employees working in Accounting and so we're kind of like a family."
"Since Gloria has taken over the grants accounting area, we have not had one major audit filing," Bartling said. "This can only happen when a person like Gloria, who is 100 percent dedicated and takes pride in the work she does for herself and for the University. I've been working with her for 23 years and Gloria has always been an outstanding, professional person to work with. She is an excellent representative and is totally dedicated to USD."
Barnes, originally of Mitchell, began working at USD in 1968. She and her husband, Bob, have five children and three grandchildren.
