Gaines enters guilty plea, apologizes to team, USD Kaseem Gaines, a senior cornerback for The University of South Dakota football team, has apologized to the team and the university for his actions on Sept. 2 of this year.
"I apologize to my teammates, coaching staff, fellow USD students and to the university for my actions earlier this fall," Gaines said. "I did not use the proper judgement when I was confronted with a difficult situation. I want to thank the administration, fellow teammates and our coaching staff for supporting me. In difficult times, it is important to receive support from those around you. Therefore, I very much regret that I caused negative attention on the university."
Gaines pled guilty on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to misdemeanor charges of false impersonation and resisting arrest. Both charges resulted from an incident at an off-campus house party on Sept. 2. A felony aggravated assault charge was dismissed by the Clay County state's attorney.
"Our student athletes are accountable for their actions and we take the steps necessary to ensure that any individual situation is addressed appropriately," said head football coach John Austin. "Kaseem did not use proper judgement earlier this year. We feel that he will learn from this situation and move on to better things."
