Gymnasts host Roosevelt in first meet of season The Tanager gymnastics team opened Vermillion High School's winter sports action on Friday, Dec. 1 by entertaining the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders in the first meet of the season.
Inclement weather had caused the rescheduling of wrestling and gymnastics, which originally were on the calendar earlier to introduce the new seasons for all winter sports.
With 25 gymnasts, led by seniors Beth Pier, Tabitha Hubert, and Natalie Tuetken, Coach Mark Upward has been busily helping the younger girls in preparing their routines.
It is difficult to develop uneven bar and floor exercise routines, given the limited time and space available at the beginning of the season especially for the seventh- and eighth-grade participants in the JV section. However, some of the youngsters entered the JV competition are:
Floor exercise Crystal Coakley and Amanda Haukaas; Beam Amy Mart and Shanina Hayes; Vault Jadee Hofer (all seventh-graders). Eighth-grader Tyra Upward entered beam and vault, as did Carly Bernard, a sophomore, who placed fourth on beam with a score of 5.1.
Following are the Tanager varsity placers and scores for each event and all-around:
Beam: Fourth Tabby Hubert 6.1; fifth Amber Reisdorph 5.7; sixth Katie Connors 5.6.
Uneven bars: Fourth Sarah Christopherson 7.3; fifth Natalie Tuetken and Brittney Gilkyson 6.6 (tie).
Floor exercise: Fourth Christopherson 7.25; seventh Meganne Hovden 6.6; eighth Reisdorph 6.4.
Vault: Fifth Christopherson 8.0; seventh Hovden 7.9; eighth Connors 7.8.
All-around: Third Christopherson 27.95; sixth Reisdorph 24.6.
Roosevelt had the winning team score of 121.4, while Vermillion scored a respectable 107.1.
"I was very pleased with our score of 107 points," Coach Upward said. "We have more things to add to our routines. The team score isn't indicative of how good we can be."
