Local Coast Guard unit receives honor as most outstanding

Local Coast Guard unit receives honor as most outstanding United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 6, which is comprised of flotillas located in Yankton, Bismarck, ND, Sioux City, IA and a detachment in Vermillion, received the Most Outstanding Division of the Year Award during Coast Guard District 8, Western Rivers Region annual meeting held recently in Bettendorf, IA.

Division 6 competed against 89 flotillas from 15 divisions from 13 states to win this prestigious award for the year 2000. The division was honored for excellence in the following mission categories: marine safety, search and rescue, search recovery, communications, disaster response unit readiness, surface operations, vessel safety checks, coast guard licensing classes, search and rescue training for state and county entities, and boat and personal watercraft public education.

The areas of responsibility assigned by the United States Coast Guard to Division 6, the second smallest division in the 8th District, Western Rivers Region, includes Lake Sakakawea and Northern Lake Oahe in Bismarck, Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, and the Missouri River downstream from Gavins Point Dam in Yankton to Decatur, NE.
