Cora Joanne Heikes, 71, of Lesterville, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Cora Heikes was born Feb. 14, 1929 in Sioux City, IA, to Vern and Dorothy (Ford) Heikes. She attended school in Dakota City, NE and the Vermillion grade schools, graduating from Vermillion High School in 1946. She received her teaching degree in music from the University of Colorado, and did some graduate work at Colorado State College.
She moved from Loveland, CO, to Vermillion in 1978, and was currently living in Lesterville, where she was raising lambs and selling wool.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Vermillion, the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and PEO.
Survivors include a brother: Russell Heikes and his wife, Kay, of Vermillion; and four nieces and four nephews.
Her parents, a brother, Hanley, and a sister, Marilyn Cave, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, with burial in BluffView Cemetery in Vermillion.
Clifford J. Johnson, 101, of Westerville, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at the Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda.
Clifford was born Nov. 8, 1899 in Westerville to Richard and Lena (Miller) Johnson. He attended school in Meckling and Westerville. He had farmed most of his life in the Westerville area with his parents, and had never been married.
He was a member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, where he had been an usher from 1929-1980 when he moved into the Heritage Manor in Wakonda.
A cousin, Minnie Anderson of Vermillion, and two nieces, Elaine Molsted and Phyllis Hagen of Colorado, survive him.
Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was two hours prior to the service at the church. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion was in charge of arrangements.
