James McManus, 73, Irene, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000 at Avera Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Irene.
James Patrick McManus was born July 7, 1927 at Yankton, to Ed and Kate (Slowey) McManus. He attended Knodel Country School.
He married Charlotte Ackerman on May 6, 1949. They lived in the Mission Hill area for some time as well as Volin, and have resided in Irene, for the past 30 years.
Jim farmed for a short time, and worked for the Yankton County Highway Department for 20 years. He also worked part time as a truck driver for Frick Trucking.
He served in the United States Army during World War II as a military policeman.
He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and a lifelong member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 of Yankton.
Jim enjoyed working on and building beaded lights. He also liked to hunt and especially enjoyed camping with his family.
Survivors include his wife: Charlotte; four sons: Bill (Char), Chester, James (Pam), Sioux Falls, Jeff, Irene, and Tim (Becky), Irene; 10 daughters: Donna (Dean) Daniels, Yankton, Cathy (Larry) Risty, Redwood Falls, MN, Teresa (Bill Noyer) Stockman, Springfield, Jeannette (John Hagen) Dunker, Orient, Pam (Randy) Anderson, Irene, Betsy McManus, Glenwood Springs, CO, LeeAnn (Terry) Moen, Irene, Connie McManus, Marion, Chris (Ken) Meylor, Sioux Falls, and Laura (Bob Eskins) McManus, Yankton; four sisters: Ellen Frick and Elaine Hohentahner, both of Yankton, Mary Catherine Theil, Irvine, CA, and Colleen Slagle, Yankton; 35 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Joseph, one sister and one brother.
Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Dec. 5, at St. Columba Catholic Church, rural Irene. Burial was in St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside rites by Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post #791 of Yankton.
Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, was in charge of arrangements.
Clayton B. Gustad, 70, of Mission Hill, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
He was born Nov. 14, 1930 in Yankton to Julian and Ione (Freng) Gustad. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Volin, and attended school in Yankton and Volin, graduating from Volin High School in 1948. He enlisted in the Navy, serving for one year, and was called back to the Naval reserve in 1952, serving aboard the USS Perkins during the Korean Conflict.
He was later discharged from the service, and married Ruth Bjornebo on May 22, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Volin.
He had worked at S&T Appliance, Farmers Co-op, and the Cenex in Yankton, and enjoyed gardening until he was unable to do so.
He is survived by his wife: Ruth, of Mission Hill; a son: Jon and his wife, Sarah, of Sioux Falls; and a daughter: Kristin Vavra and her husband, Tom, of Mustang, OK. He is also survived by a grandson: Steven Vavra and his wife, Vanessa of Maryland; a granddaughter: Jennifer Vavra, of Mustang OK; and a brother-in-law: Jim Bjornebo and his wife Donna of Mission Hill; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill, with burial in the Vangen Cemetery rural Mission Hill. Visitation was 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
