Residence halls plan fund-raising events

Residence halls plan fund-raising events University of South Dakota residence halls are sponsoring the second annual Casino Night and the Winter Semi-Formal Dance. Proceeds from both activities will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Casino Night will be held on Dec. 1 and the dance will be held on Dec. 2 Both events will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Commons Dining Hall in the North Complex on the USD campus.

The Beede Mickelson complex is the primary sponsor of both events. Co-sponsors include the Residence Hall Association and HELP, the USD peer educators organization. The USD Coyote football team will also assist by providing card dealers during Casino Night. Local area businesses and merchants have provided services and items to be used as prizes.

"We hope that this Casino Night will be as successful as the one last year," said Maureen Steinley, Casino Night chairperson. "Last year was a huge success and we received support from the whole campus. It is a good feeling to see the students pull together and work for a common goal helping the children."

Casino night allows students and community members to use "play" money while gambling. Participants then may purchase raffle tickets for the drawing at the end of the night. This year's top prize is a one-week vacation in Las Vegas with airfare and hotel costs included.

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the wishes of children in South Dakota with life threatening illness. Their goal is to "enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy." Make-A-Wish of South Dakota has granted over 350 wishes to South Dakota children since its creation in 1984. This year the national organization is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
