Road conditions cause accident Icy road conditions were the cause of a two-vehicle accident Dec. 1 near the intersection of Highways 19 and 50.
Randal Rathman, 38, of Sioux City, IA, hit a patch of ice as he was traveling east in a 1994 Chevy truck on Highway 50 at about 5:18 a.m. He lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the westbound lane, according to Vermillion Police Chief Bruce Plate. Craig Herbold, 52, of Jefferson, was traveling west in a 1996 International truck-trailer rig, and swerved to avoid hitting Rathman, but couldn't. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch on the south side of the highway.
Rathman was transported to Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital. Herbold, who was driving for Perishable Distributors of Iowa, was not injured. Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
