Tanager JV rallies to win home game by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to beat the South Sioux City Cardinals 51-40 in boys� basketball Dec. 15 at home.
The Vermillion JV had trailed by five at halftime.
Jon Brooks scored 13 points, and sank three of four 3-point attempts.
�Jon Brooks provided the spark we needed, scoring all 13 of his points in the third quarter,� said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanagers led 9-4 after the opening period, trailed 24-19 at halftime, and then led 37-35 after the third quarter.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 5 of 8 from long distance.
�Once we picked up the team defense, the rest of our game followed,� said Coach Luitjens. �Our defense was led by junior guard Eric Rickord, who was on the floor after every loose ball. He was the difference.�
The Vermillion JV now has a record of 2-0, while the Cardinal junior varsity fell to 0-3.
The Vermillion JV made 14 of 19 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 11 of 29 field goals, while the Cardinal junior varsity was 14 of 33 from the field. The Cardinals sank 3 of 4 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
�Nathan Boots gave us some great bench points knocking down a couple of big 3-pointers,� Coach Luitjens said.
