Tanagers start new season with victory by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied to top the Harrisburg Tigers 57-50 in boys� basketball Dec. 8 at home in a win capped by a 26-13 fourth-quarter surge.
Vermillion had trailed by six going into the final period.
The season-opening win gave the Vermillion varsity a record of 1-0 while the Harrisburg varsity fell to 0-1.
Bo Nelson scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds and made two steals. Jeremi Cowman scored 13 points and made four assists. Paul Tims scored 8 points, pulled down five rebounds and made three assists.
�These three boys led our balanced scoring, and made huge plays throughout the game,� said varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �When we needed something big, they provided it.�
The Tanagers led 10-7 after the opening period, trailed 24-21 at halftime, and then trailed 37-31 going into the fourth quarter.
�Our boys made some great defensive plays to win this game,� said Coach Terronez. �We stayed focused in the last two minutes of play to hold Harrisburg at 50 points, which helped us with our 10 point run.�
In the final quarter, Tims stole the ball with 1:24 left on the clock and hit Brett Hogen for a lay-up and a foul to put the Tanagers up 51-50.
�We were down two points and needed a big play,� Coach Terronez said. �Paul answered the call defensively, and put Brett in position to finish the play.�
Vermillion hit 6 of 21 three-point tries and hit 17 of 25 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 11 of 23 field goal attempts, while the Harrisburg varsity was 11 of 23 from the field. The Harrisburg varsity hit 5 of 14 three-pointers and made 13 of 22 free throw attempts.
Several individual efforts helped in the win.
�Jon Brooks and Nick Olson had a nice game,� Coach Terronez said. �Jon chipped in seven points and added four assists, while Nick grabbed six rebounds. These two are only sophomores and have many more good games ahead of them.�
