USD conducts winter commencement Dec. 16 The University of South Dakota held its 24th winter commencement exercises for approximately 417 candidates on Saturday, Dec. 16 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
Alumnus Tom Fritz, a managing partner and member of the board of directors for Lynn, Jackson, Schultz & Lebrun, P.C. of Rapid City, delivered the commencement address titled "Jump In, The Water's Fine!" Fritz also presented an Alumni Achievement Award during the commencement festivities.
President James W. Abbott and Regent James O. Hansen conferred the degrees. Faculty marshals included USD professors Steven Bucklin, Diane Duin, Kurt Hackemer, Werner Kitzler, Leon Korte, Solveig Korte, Clayton Lehmann, Mary Mock, Barbara Yutrzenka, and Gerald Yutrzenka.
Emeriti faculty Joan England, Allen Johnson and Corinne Milburn were honorary marshals. Blake Benson, Angella Joslin, and Jean Mayer performed the Alma Mater for the commencement. USD Alumni Association board member Brian L. Radke delivered the alumni welcome to graduating students.
Fritz received all three of his degrees from USD, graduating with his bachelor of arts in 1968, juris doctorate in 1971 and his master's in 1975. He served as the president of the State Bar of South Dakota from 1997-1998, and as a state bar delegate to the American Bar Association for 11 years.
Fritz is licensed to practice law by the South Dakota Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. In 1997 Fritz served as president o fthe Young Lawyers Section.
