VHS junior varsity squeaks by Tigers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers held on in the second half to squeak past the Harrisburg Tigers 47-45 in boys� basketball Dec. 8 at home.
The Vermillion JV had led by 10 at halftime.
The season-opening win gave the Vermillion JV a record of 1-0 while the Harrisburg junior varsity fell to 0-1.
Thad Roche scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
�We played all 11 junior varsity players, and they all contributed,� said Vermillion JV Coach Lance Luitjens. �We shot the ball pretty well from the perimeter and had some nice inside and outside play.�
The Tanagers jumped in front 14-13 after the first quarter, led 30-20 after the second quarter, and then held a lead of 37-32 going into the final period.
The Vermillion JV sank 4 of 10 from the line while the Tigers connected on 4 of 11 free throw attempts.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Thad Roche really played strong for us both offensively and defensively,�coach Luitjens said.
