Baisden wins regional Silver Gloves The Vermillion Boxing Team (VBT) is swinging into the 2000-2001 season. Competitions have included the Dec. 2 South Dakota State Silver Gloves Tournament, the Dec. 30 Cheyenne River Invitational, and the Region IV Silver Gloves Tournament in Sioux Falls.
Coach Marclef Zimiga prepared and cornered VBT boxers at the State Silver Gloves Tournament held in Sioux Falls in early December. At the tournament, Chanka Wilch (112#) and Karlis Baisden (132#) boxed in the championship finals. Wilch was defeated on points by veteran boxer Stoney Larvie of Mission who went on to win the Silver Gloves regional championship.
Baisden defeated Tim Closky from Mission by an RSC (referee stops contest) in the first round of the scheduled three round championship bout to take the South Dakota State Silver Gloves 12-13 year-old 132# title.
Baisden traveled to the Cheyenne River Invitational with Assistant VBT trainer and South Dakota official Matt Stricherz of Vermillion. Baisden faced Kyle Frazier of Eagle Butte in a hard-hitting and crowd-pleasing match. Baisden's more experienced opponent outweighed him by 24 pounds. Despite the weight and experience advantage, Baisden's speed and hard work ethic proved to be enough to win a decision.
At the Region IV (SD, ND, MN, WI) Silver Gloves Tournament in Sioux Falls on Jan. 6 and 7 Baisden faced Minnesota Silver Gloves Champion, Ernest Davis in the 12-13-year-old 132# championship. Baisden outpunched Davis 2 to 1 and won a majority decision to become the 2001 Region IV Silver Gloves 132# champion. Baisden will now advance to the National Silver Gloves Championship at Lenexa, KS from Jan. 31 through Feb. 3.
"This was Karlis' goal, to make it to the National Silver Gloves," said Coach Zimiga. "He realizes he'll face tougher competition than ever before, and that gives me confidence he'll do well."
Before Baisden travels to Lenexa, the team will be traveling twice to Nebraska for invitational matches. First, the team will go to Madison on Jan. 13 then to Norfolk on Jan. 27.
