Beaty to celebrate 95th birthday Jan. 21 Marjorie H. Beaty of Vermillion will celebrate her 95th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 21, at the home of her daughter, Mary and Joe Edelen in Vermillion.
Also celebrating with her will be her grandchildren, Anthony Edelen, who attends college at NW Missouri State University, and Jarrod Edelen, a student at The University of South Dakota.
Beaty was born in Buffalo, NY in 1906 and graduated from the University of Rochester with both BA and MA degrees in mathematics.
She was hired to teach mathematics at USD in 1931 and came by train to Vermillion. She taught mathematics at USD, retiring in 1976.
She also served as USD's acting dean of women in 1941. She taught mathematics at Yankton College in 1984 just prior to its closing.
In 1933 she married Donald W. Beaty who lived at Anna Vaith's boarding house on Forest Ave. They were married in Chicago, because it was half way between South Dakota and New York. After her marriage, she attended the University of Colorado where she received a Ph.D degree in mathematics in 1939.
She has two children: Debra Beaty Blanton of Shelby, NC and Mary Beaty Edelen of Vermillion. She also has six grandchildren.
