Orioles top Tanagers 59-52 in Jan. 19 action by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were topped by the Lennox Orioles 59-52 in boys� varsity basketball Jan. 19 at Lennox.
�Paul Tims had a great defensive game, snagging four steals that connected into lay-ups,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �Also, Bo Nelson had 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and had seven rebounds to lead us.�
The Vermillion varsity lost the game from the free throw line, making 6 of 13 charity tosses compared with 15 of 22 for Lennox. The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 21 turnovers.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 11-6 after the first quarter, trailed 29-25 at halftime, and then trailed 42-34 going into the final period.
The loss dropped the Vermillion varsity to a record of 3-4, while the Lennox varsity improved to 5-3.
The Vermillion varsity connected on 2 of 7 three-point attempts. The Tanagers made 22 of 40 field goals, while the Lennox varsity was 19 of 46 from the field. The Lennox varsity made 2 of 5 three-point attempts.
Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.
�We had 17 turnovers and gave up 12 offensive rebounds in the first half and were still within four points,� Coach Terronez said. �Once we put everything together and stay focused on both ends of the court, we�ll give ourselves a chance to come out on top of these close games.�
