Shooting woes hinder Tanager varsity play by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the West Central Trojans 63-42 in boys� varsity basketball Jan. 16 at home as the Tanagers shot only 25 percent from the field.

The West Central varsity stayed unbeaten at 10-0.

The Tanagers� Paul Tims played a great defensive game against Josh Mueller.

�Paul�s job was to keep Josh at 20 points, and he achieved the goal,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �When he was taken out of the game with 3:21 left, Josh had exactly 20 points. This is well below his average.�

The Tanagers fell behind 16-8 after the opening period, trailed 28-17 at halftime, and then trailed 44-25 going into the final period.

�The team played well defensively, but our shots have not been falling,� said Coach Terronez. �We have to shoot better than 27 percent against the higher quality teams.�

The Vermillion varsity season mark fell to 3-3.

The Vermillion varsity made 5 of 14 three-point attempts and connected on 13 of 22 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 7 of 28 from the field, while West Central varsity was 21 of 31 from the field. West Central varsity hit 3 of 10 three-pointers and made 12 of 19 free throw attempts.

The Tanagers had some good individual efforts despite the score.

�Brett Hogen had an aggressive game and played a key role in getting Alderson in foul trouble,� Coach Terronez said. �He ended up shooting eight free throws by drawing the foul on the offensive end.�
